Loving this series Christine! Always loved ur Might Could approach. I'm still finding the style for my cartoon approach cause I know I don't want to go for surrealism! Loved your blobby horses & I could see a few other critters morphing from there lol. I found a stick figure book that had fun ideas for animals. Tons of ideas floating around. Thanks Again Christine!!
Very cool. I travel with an art company that’s very into nature journaling. They want us to capture every tiny detail. I can do details just fine but I’d rather take a photo then do art about how it makes me feel. So I’ll often have bits of detail linked together by watercolour wash and coloured pencils. First and foremost for me is the Art. I can now imagine your little characters on the page pointing out the facts - another addition that will contribute well to the nature Journaling perspective. Hugs my dear. Hoping your personal life is still going well. 🤗🤗🤗💕💕
I really enjoyed this, Christine! Thank you! I didn’t realize faces, hands, and horses were universally troublesome in the drawing world and not just for newbie me!
Do you have an existing post or another resource you could recommend on how to get started with drawing? I know a couple little basics but I want to practice drawing more and don’t know what to practice: shapes? objects around the house? copying characters? doesn’t matter?
I want to discover my “style” but maybe that doesn’t come till much later? Would appreciate if you have anything you could link me to. 🤗
I'm so glad it resonated with you, Erika! And happy to hear that you want to dig into drawing more! An essay series on how to get started drawing is a great idea. That's not something that I currently have put together, but I'd say either of these two of my Skillshare classes would be a good place to start:
Hope that helps! But now you've sparked the idea in my head to make an essay series here on Substack about how to get started drawing! 🌟 What kinds of things would you be looking for in a series like that?
Oh this is wonderful! Thanks Christine! I will save these links and keep in mind these classes. They seem like just the type of resource I was looking for.
As far as the series goes, I’m not 100% sure and you might already cover them in your classes. But, here’s a random smattering of questions/thoughts I’ve had:
Do I have to start with drawing “from life?” (I think your post ended up addressing this!) What kinds of things should I be practicing? Shapes? Imitating other folks? I’m someone who loves rules and structure—am I doomed at art if I can’t just get started? What kind of “practicing” should I be focusing on? Drawing a variety of people, characters, things, etc or keeping a narrow focus?
Right now, I mostly want to learn to draw because I have stories I want to be able to tell visually. But I’ll be honest the *act* of drawing has mostly felt frustrating and not fun. I like creating via Procreate more than using pencils, but I like the *look* of traditional medium better. I think I like the digital aspect because I’m such a perfectionist and can undo a million times. (Which also doesn’t seem to help me…)
I don’t expect you to answer any of these questions or solve my plight. 😉 I’m mostly sharing these thoughts as a newbie in case it sparks ideas for future resources you might want to offer!
I love this! As an artist, I am continuously met with challenges as I create. I love the encouragement and tenacity in this writing. It might look different, but it will have my style. Thank you for the positive perspective.

Oh, how fun! I've always wanted to get into nature journaling, but have never been able to stick with it for some reason. One day!
