Welcome to Week #202 of Might Could Draw Today (MCDT)! I’m here to invite you to draw with me today!

👋 If you’re new here: I started MCDT in 2016 and through its various iterations, it has spurred the creation of over 20,000 pieces of art by hundreds of artists from around the world! A new art prompt is delivered every Monday and you have the week to draw from that theme however you choose.

Quick Announcements

  • 🗓 Our next MCDT Live is this Thursday, Dec. 15, from 7:30–8:30m EST! MCDT Live is our monthly virtual drawing hour available to all Studiomates members and paid Substack subscribers. We’ll be doing a bit of show and tell and drawing the weirdest tree ornaments you’ve got! The Zoom link will be sent to paid subscribers one hour before the event.

  • 🎄 This will be our last week of MCDT for 2022! I’ll be taking some time off to plan my next year and spend the holidays with family. I Might Could Do That will return on January 2!

Week #202: Dec. 12, 2022–Jan. 1, 2023

Theme: Open Doors

I tend to get quite contemplative this time of year, thinking about the year that’s ending and the year about to begin. I usually write an essay about the transition each year, and what I hope to do more or do less in the next. And so, I thought, why not combine that with drawing?

I’m reminded too, of this quote from the author Zora Neale Hurston,

“There are years that ask questions and years that answer.”
― Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God

Many people bemoan New Years Resolutions and New Years Eve and the whole idea of anything special about January 1. But I don’t know, I love the feeling of hope and possibility that come with a new year. It’s a time to either reflect and be grateful or look back and commit to making a change.

So as we draw between now and New Years Day, let’s think. What open door are you stepping through? What do you want to move away from? And what do you want to move towards?

Drawing and writing can help get us there.

Share Your Art with Us!

Week 201: The Nutcracker art submissions from Suzette Craig, Craig Austin, and me.

I expected lots of pink, froofy ballerinas last week, and instead, we got some amazing moody, creepy nutcrackers and rat kings! It’s always so fun to see how people take these open-ended prompts in such different directions! So thank you to everyone who shared your art with us!

Drawing the same thing collectively is all the more fun when we can share and see each other’s work. Let’s keep it going, by sharing your Open Door drawings with us all week long in our Substack Chat thread! (P.S. It’s now available in Android!)

I hope you have a happy and restful holiday and if I don’t see you in the chat or at our Zoom event, I’ll see ya here again in 2023!

<3,
Christine

(I think only you can start a new thread in the Substack Chat. The last one there is still week 199.)
